One of my … One of my favourites was not even from a real rugby match, it was from a line he spoke as commentator in ”Jonah Lomu Rugby”. I last played that game about 10 years ago yet I remenber it like yesterday;
”They’re like Sherman tanks, rumbling up the field”.
And in real-life, during the 1998 Wales-South Africa test, our prop Ollie Le Roux carried the ball into contact and broke a few tackles and his response was;
I remember him … I remember him describing Gary Armstrong – “He’s like a wee terrier at the base of the scrum”, or something to that effect. A master who will be missed.
it was a privelege … it was a privelege just to have listened to him, gone but NEVER forgotten, the word legend is thrown about too much these days but in this case not thrown about enough. I grew up on his commentaries, when I heard I cried.
There is also a … There is also a tribute song using his famous catchphrases ’3 pounds of Haggis’ as a homage to the voice of rugby. Search Bill McLaren Tribute Song or 3 Pounds of Haggis.
A great man, will be sadly missed.
Will be missed- … Will be missed- he’s a lesson in humility to us all. Was lucky enough to visit his town Hawick a few years ago to a rugby playing family – lovely town, they were like their old houses, good solid people, as those large cut stones they are built of.
Another commentator of old that was up there was the great Eddie Waring from the other code, always had humour about him too.
[Good Middlesex Sevens clip from the early '70s at the start above, London Welsh v. someone in blue? Spotted JPR there!]
Rugby on TV hasn’t … Rugby on TV hasn’t been the same since his retirement… RIP Bill, up there with Motson, Benaud and Murray Walker as the names synonomous with sporting commentary.
I grew up listening … I grew up listening to Bill’s commentaries. Although technically an amateur he was more professional than anyone commentating today.
I’ll always remember his commentary of Alan Lawson scoring a try for Scotland. Such was his professionalism you would never it was his son in law.
Rest in peace Bill. You will live on in our memories.
The best rugby … The best rugby commentator ever….with regards to all his family who I am sure will miss him deeply. Thanks Bill, for introducing rugby to me!
